Description Matthew Hatem CLA 2006-08-14 13:27:25 EDT
We need support for a dedicated periphery (or sidebar) section of the workbench window. The interactions for this area are very similar to other sidebar interfaces such as Google sidebar. In our product we have implemented a feature like this. We use standard Eclipse View parts as the primary programming model for contributing parts to this dedicated area. In doing so we needed to use Eclipse internals to create and provide services for the view parts.

We think this is something Eclipse should support moving forward. The "sticky view" feature does not satisfy this requirement however one possible solution could be to enhance the sticky view feature to work more like a side bar interface.

Matt, would you be able to come up with a proposal for this?
Comment 2 Matthew Hatem CLA 2006-08-15 11:47:23 EDT
Yes, I can provide a complete design proposal for this and contribute code.
Comment 3 Nick Edgar CLA 2006-08-23 10:13:45 EDT
Boris, I suggest talking to Kevin H about this one. I believe there are other IBM products that would prefer the sidebar-style of interaction than either sticky views or fast views.

Should also sort out how this relates to bug 88239 (Matt, if you're not looking at that one for 3.3, you should probably reassign it to Platform-UI-Inbox).

Marking as needinfo since Matt was to provide a proposal (if we received it, please note in this bug report).

Prakash is now responsible for watching bugs in the [RCP] component area.

This bug hasn't had any activity in quite some time. Maybe the problem got resolved, was a duplicate of something else, or became less pressing for some reason - or maybe it's still relevant but just hasn't been looked at yet.

If you have further information on the current state of the bug, please add it. The information can be, for example, that the problem still occurs, that you still want the feature, that more information is needed, or that the bug is (for whatever reason) no longer relevant.
