I open eclipse 3.1.2 on an AMD64 with sun jdk 1.5.05. I the open liferay's portal source:

When I try to open any java source file the JVM crashes. I'll attach the hs crash log next.

I suspect this is a known bug in Sun VM 1.5, also see bug 71987.
You may want to ping them.

1.5.0_06 is supposed to have the fix you need.
