Need a more subtle default for the grid that has the dots more spaced out.  This could mean using a custom Line style with a dot pattern of Dot-Space-Space-Dot.

Also, take a look at the guideline drawing routine since it's look more dotted.

patch for the grid line spaced dot style

I have added a new default line style called "Spaced Dot" because its dots have more space between them. This setting was chosen to be default because the grid is less obtrusive than the Dot setting.
