Bug 112225 talks about having a save lifecycle that is not tied to a single editor or view. This may be helpful during merges as well, especially for logical models whose model elements do not map 1-to-1 to resources.

I've released all the Team support for this but it won't work properly until the patch in bug 126230 is applied to Compare.
