The Portal Gets Components
The Portal will finally fully support components/sub-sub-projects! It has been some time since we updated the development process to work with components, but our software has been lagging sadly behind. Updating all of the code has been a big project as there are so many changes that needed to be made to integrate this everywhere. Project meta-data and elections were not supported for components in the Portal which has been a bit of a headache for committers, leads, and Foundation staff.
No more! I have spent a good bit of time over the last several weeks getting everything up and running. We will be deploying the code later this week. Due to the complexity of the code involved, and the massive number of dependencies throughout the infrastructure, it’s likely I missed something. But you, the wonderful Eclipse community, will undoubtedly give us a gentle nudge if you find something that needs attention. ![]()

It will definitely be a huge help to have this support in the portal. Good work guys.
Keep in mind that many Eclipse projects are currently scrambling to produce release review data for the Galileo release (IP logs, slideware). Our slideware deadline is May 29, and IP log deadline is June 3. Hopefully this transition goes smoothly, but if it in any way impacts our ability to gather and submit this data there will be many unhappy committers and foundation staff (much of the data comes from the IP tool and dash, which are driven by portal metadata).
Perhaps the final weeks of the big annual release isn’t the best time to roll this out, and a better time would be just after Galileo comes out? Just a thought…

John, I must have punched the big red button.
This was really just a joking jab because people always open something whenever something changes, even if it’s not a new issue.
In any case, to allay any concerns, that’s not the kind of issue I’m talking about. Nothing in the meta-data is affected for existing projects. Currently components don’t have it: they now should after the release. The kind of problem that I was referring to would affect component meta-data not showing up on the website…
Remember we’re pretty conservative around here about releasing stuff. The problem is that for the release there are also lots of elections going on so that people can get code committed as committers. The community is feeling pain from the lack of support for components.
