A WebMaster’s view of Eclipse.org

Rants, praise and observations related to the technical and psychological challenges of running servers for a pretty busy site.

git to replace CVS, Bugzilla, mailing lists, more at Eclipse.org

With all the DVCS talk at EclipseCon and in The Bug, I quickly became convinced git is the way to go.  With git, we can not only remove CVS and SVN, but Bugzilla also.  Want to report a bug?  Just file a git.  Got a patch?  Just commit it, and git will figure itself out.

Mailing lists?  No more.  Just send a git, and everyone will get it.  Got it?

XMPP and IRC will also be deprecated — you just need to git someone.  For IRC channels, just set up a git hub.

Newsgroups and web forums are so passé.  Just post a git.

Our MySQL databases will also be migrated to git.  Instead of SQL queries, a git fetch will be used.  Much more efficient, and there’s no need for a central servers, as all fetches will be handled by peers.

These are exciting times!

    Nice try ;)

Very, very, very cool!!! However, we have to be careful because if things are in CVS and Git people may get confused. To help avoid confusion I have removed all projects from CVS that I have access too. Others should quickly do the same. I should start deleting newsgroup messages too. Maybe I’ll start with the EMF newsgroup (not much activity there).

I’m not sure if this is an April Fool’s joke, or just bitterness at all the requests for Git lately :-P

Cool! Can we have git handle torrents as well ?

Joke aside: Take a look at http://github.com/blog/272-github-pages

@Ian: Sure, but I keep hearing that EMF is dead :)

@Chris: It’s all in good fun. Now git off my lawn!

@Antoine: I can hardly keep up with you as it is .. Don’t put more on my plate! :)
