A WebMaster’s view of Eclipse.org

Rants, praise and observations related to the technical and psychological challenges of running servers for a pretty busy site.

A Great EclipseCon

It was great to be at EclipseCon this year and to be able to put so many more names (and user IDs for we webmasters) to faces.  I really got to spend some time talking to people who I have worked with extensively and never met and I think that’s a great part of the EclipseCon experience.  It was also nice to get to meet so many new people, particularly contributors whom I’ve never even met online.  It was such a whirlwind week that I didn’t get to communicate as much as I’d have liked with some people, so be sure to look me up next EclipseCon.

One of my major jobs this year at the conference was working with data feeds from the RFID system we used to monitor session attendance.  This was a great experiment and I think we got a lot of good data out of it.  Scott Rosenbaum, this year’s great program chair, was crunching away on the numbers to learn what we might be able to do to improve next year’s conference.  The Birt Exchange guys put up some nice stats using their online reporting viewer tool as well that you can peruse if you’d like.

We had some great discussions about DVCS and how we might be able to get this set up for all of you clamoring for Git.  We came up with a plan in coordination with a lot of folks from the community who attended two BoFs and a panel on version control.  We will be posting more about it on several bugs (and likely here) in the next week or so.

I hope you all had as much fun as I did!  For those of you whom I still didn’t get to connect with this year, there’s always EclipseCon 2010!

(BTW, Denis and I will start posting photos of who is posting each entry since people tell me they don’t notice which of us it is)

Hey Karl, I saw some nice stats/charts the other day, but now your “some nice stats” link doesn’t work … I get a error pop-up that says “3224: The value of a required parameter is missing.” Can you post another link?

Hey David, it looks like the Birt Exchange folks took down their stats site. I had thought they’d keep it running but it seems not. It’s too bad they did that right after the conference. :(
