A WebMaster’s view of Eclipse.org

Rants, praise and observations related to the technical and psychological challenges of running servers for a pretty busy site.

Laugh at Karl, win a t-shirt

When you work with the Eclipse servers intimately, you’re bound to break them at some time. I’ve done it, Matt has done it, Nathan has done it, and even Bjorn has done it. This time, Karl earns the clown nose for removing all our download mirrors from the list (he wanted to disable just one). Without mirrors, our downloads servers just died, leaving you at a dead end for Eclipse downloads.

Using our bandwidth graph above, can you tell when that happened? The first person to correctly identify at what time Karl pressed “ENTER” to the faulty command will receive an Eclipse t-shirt.

… and Karl, welcome to the “I broke eclipse.org” club!

  2. Andrew Niefer Says:

Is the guess of 18:45ish too obvious to be correct?

  3. Andrei Says:

I think it was at 19:45…

  4. Chris Aniszczyk (zx) Says:

    $1 dollar $1 dollar!

    How about 18:15?

  5. MichaƂ Tkacz Says:

    19:43 maybe?

  6. Kevin Says:

    19:36?

  7. StuffBenFound.blogspot.com Says:

    19:20?

  8. Andrew Niefer Says:

Apparently I can’t read a graph, I was originally looking at the jump just after 19:30. But I’ll stick with my original answer.

  9. nickb Says:

    4:20, of course. :)

    Speaking of shirts, how’s this?

  10. trisa Says:

I guess it was at about 19:40, when the curve started climbing steeply upwards… outsch!

  11. Mark Says:

    13:30

  12. Denis Roy Says:

Andrei and Michal, you win!! Please email me your shipping coordinates to webmaster@eclipse.org if you’d like me to send you an Eclipse t-shirt. I’d also need your shirt size, too.

    Congrats!

BTW, Kevin, you were disqualified because you already have Eclipse t-shirts :-)

  13. Doug Schaefer Says:

What scares me how how close you guys run near the apparent limit up until 12…

  14. Denis Roy Says:

Doug, we often run at the limit. Quality Of Service (QoS) rules make sure www/wiki/CVS/bugs etc. traffic goes out before downloads traffic.

  15. adsense Says:
