A WebMaster’s view of Eclipse.org

Rants, praise and observations related to the technical and psychological challenges of running servers for a pretty busy site.

How do you e-mail?

I’m old-school when it comes to the Internet communication. I spell e-mail with a hyphen. I top-post. I don’t know what facebook is, nor do I really care to know. An emoticon is made up of ASCII characters, not graphics. I don’t have a myspace page, and I still prefer Plain Text e-mails to HTML.

But tonight I received a copy of a reply message that I sent out on a mailing list. The previous e-mails in the thread were HTML, and my response e-mail PlainText’ed it all in an ugly mess, making me reconsider my old-school, low-frills preferences. What should I do? Please help me by casting your votes below:

Top or bottom posting:

I’ll compile the results tomorrow night by grepping my Apache logs for /webmaster/.

That is a darn-clever way of handling voting, Denis! I’ve casted my opinions accordingly.

Incidentally, IMHO you should put the 404 within the page headers and sidebar prevalent on the rest of the site. Just a thought though. I’m not as passionate about it as I am about top-posting. ;-)

    Thanks, Daniel… I’ve done this before: http://eclipsewebmaster.blogspot.com/2006/02/are-we-doing-good-job.html

To me it’s the only way to run a poll!

I prefer plain text and bottom post (quote only relevant parts) in newsgroups, mailing lists and private emails.

At my company I use rich-text (sort of HTML) and top-post. IMHO that works very well in such a closed an environment where everybody uses the same client. However, outgoing mail is converted to plain text.

Top-posting is IMHO necessary at work because it suddenly happens that some people go CC-ing crazy. In newsgroups and mailing list you have the full thread public available in the archive so everybody can re-read it. Thus, I find top-post annoying and cluttering there.

You top-post and consider yourself old-school when it comes to the Internet?!? No way, you are definitely not old school.
