A WebMaster’s view of Eclipse.org

Rants, praise and observations related to the technical and psychological challenges of running servers for a pretty busy site.

Committers love the Planet…

PlanetEclipse, that is (although some may like Earth as well).

EclipseZone ran several interviews with many of the Eclipse Community Awards nominees. One of the questions was “What Eclipse-related bookmarks/feeds (other than EclipseZone, of course) do you frequently use?”. PlanetEclipse was a popular answer to that question, among Ambassador, Committer and Contributor nominees alike.

PlanetEclipse was originally proposed by Ed Burnette (winner of the 2006 Top Ambassador award). It was set up by yours truly, with much assistance from top “behind-the-scenes” guy Gunnar (there should be an Eclipse Community award for that category). Gunnar and Chris then took over the design and management of the Planet. Thanks, Ed, Gunnar and Chris, for creating such a great piece of Internet!

So what are you waiting for? If you use Eclipse, or if you’re an Eclipse hacker, get a blog and write about Eclipse, then ask the Planet admins to add your blog. We want to read what you have to say.

Not just the committers … the ambassadors and (yet to be published) contributors do too :-)

BTW what is the name? A number of people were using different names:

    planeteclipse.org
    planet.eclipse.org
    planeteclipse.org/planet

Which is the normalised one which you are going to maintain in the future?

First of all, it’s congrats on the Hackergotchi face Denis (you may want to resize it so it’s similar to size with the other heads ;p)

    I personally like planet.eclipse.org ;)

Also, looking at the planet stats at dev eclipse, it looks like it’s been increasing fairly steadily in terms of hits.

It took me some time to “get” that joke… Different names … one site … Need Normalised .. maintain only one … good one! You had me going!

My first blog post about Eclipse is from May 2nd 2005. On November 5th 2006 I created an Eclipse bug with the request/suggestion to add my feed to the Planet. So far my feed (currently at 25 Eclipse posts) is still not part of Planet Eclipse. Nothing has happened to the bug. Not even a single comment.

Three other similar bug also remain open without a single comment.

Read my full blog post about this at http://litrik.blogspot.com/2007/02/lost-in-space.html

Litrik: Sorry, Sorry, Sorry… It slipped through the cracks. We’ll add it today!

Chris: I resized my face. After comments from yourself and Ian laughing wildly, I figured it was the right thing to do ;-)
