RE: [phoenix-dev] Benchmark Sites - Notes
|
Title: Message
Rather than editing the PPT, here are a few comments on
my personal likes and dislikes.
-
The idea of tabs for the information pages in a given
section is good use of real estate IMHO. It also simplifies
navigation.
-
FWIW, I personally found the cascading navigation a
pain in the backside. I cannot explain why, but after almost two years of
using OTN when I was at Oracle, I never found their navigation
intuitive.
-
What OTN calls forums is very close to what we call
newsgroups, but with *much* prettier HTML navigation. The nested forum
navigator is cool, and could have immediated applicability to
Eclipse.
-
I cannot say enough about how I would wished we had
really good search for all of the content on our
site.
-
Is that a teddy bear they're selling on the
Mozilla home page? We need a fuzzy mascot!
-
From NetBeans: printable versions of much of our
content would be helpful.
-
From NetBeans (slide 32): I like that they refer to
having a Knowledge Base and solicit their community to contribute articles and
other content to it. There are some very excellent tools out there for KB
management, and it would be really great for us to do something along these
lines.
-
The MSDN "Featured Tasks" looks like a great idea to
me.
-
Note that several of these sites seems to groups
blogs, wikis, mailing lists (a.k.a. list servers), newsgroups and forums under
the banner of "Community". I actually kinda like that. Especially if we added
the knowledge base to that grouping. What we currently call "Community" could
be called "Sightings" or the like.
-
The JetBrains "Features" page looks pretty darn cool
to me. What a huge job to write the content thought. Unless, perhaps, we could
re-use the online documentation or tutorials for
that?
Here is the PPT to put your notes in. Friday's
discussion should give list of functional and design targets for
eclipse.org
All things good,
Andrew
Friday's discussion should revolve around identified
design (i.e. voice, vocabulary, information design, navigation) and
functional targets (search engine, collaborative tools,
RSS) found on the following bench mark web sites at the same time we
should also quickly review the 'good, bad and ugly' on Eclipse.org
This exercise will aid in identifying best
practices that we will apply in the development of project
phoenix.
